Chapter 3

The Darkness Inside The Barracks

612 words•~3 min read•2026-10-12

The instant the lights went out, the room stopped feeling like a room.

It became a battlefield.

Nobody screamed.

That was how I knew the threat was real.

Commander Hayes moved first, almost silently. With one hand, he shoved me behind the desk while Colonel Vance drew her sidearm and aimed toward the entrance. Elias Ward stepped backward into a corner—not to hide, but to give himself an angle on both the door and the window.

The handle moved again.

Slowly.

Then became still.

My wrapped ribs pulsed with pain, but it felt strangely distant now. My vision slowly adjusted to the darkness.

Outside the room, the entire barracks was black.

No emergency lighting.

No glow in the corridor.

Nothing except an unnatural, heavy silence.

Hayes whispered, "Mitchell, stay low."

I followed the order only enough to reach toward my equipment bag and pull out the combat knife inside.

Ward noticed.

"Good," he murmured.

Something slid beneath the door.

A phone.

Its display illuminated the floor.

A live video was playing.Sergeant Ryan Briggs sat tied to a metal chair in what looked like an underground space. There was blood on his lip, and for the first time since I had met him, his eyes showed naked fear.

A distorted voice came through the phone.

"Avery Mitchell. You have ten minutes to come alone. Otherwise Sergeant Briggs confesses to crimes he didn't commit, and he dies."

Vance's expression hardened.

"Where is he?"

The phone camera turned.

For less than a second, I caught sight of concrete walls, yellow pipes, and an old warning sign.

Hayes swore quietly.

"Old maintenance tunnel."

The display went dark.

I stared at the lifeless phone.

Briggs had mocked me.

Threatened me.

Tried to injure me in front of hundreds of witnesses.

Now somebody expected me to save him.

Ward studied me.

"This isn't really about Briggs."

"I assumed that."

"It's about what you saw overseas."

Colonel Vance snapped her attention toward him.

"Ward. Explain. Quickly."He did.

Three years earlier, my team had entered a safehouse that officially had never existed. Inside it, we discovered missing American weapons, counterfeit military identification, and documents marked with the same symbol now resting on my desk.

Three black lines across a circle.

"The organization calls itself Black Meridian," Ward explained. "Private network. Contractors. Corrupt military officers. Intelligence assets. Weapons brokers. They don't work for a country. They work for whoever pays."

My throat went dry.

"And Briggs?"

Ward's face darkened.

"Useful idiot. Maybe they were recruiting him. Maybe he was bait."

Hayes looked at me.

"They knew you would recognize the symbol."

"And they knew I wouldn't let Briggs die," I said.

Vance narrowed her eyes.

"Would you?"

I looked at the phone.

I hated Briggs.

But hatred was not command authority.

"No, ma'am."

Hayes gave the smallest nod.

As if he had already known exactly what I would say.

Ward checked the time.

"Nine minutes."Colonel Vance cracked the door open.

The hallway was empty.

Then, from somewhere far beneath the barracks, we heard Briggs scream.

Not in anger.

Not with arrogance.

It was the scream of a man who had finally discovered that cruelty and strength were not the same thing.

Every instinct inside me went cold.

"Mitchell," Hayes said, "you are not going alone."

The distorted voice came from the phone again even though the screen remained dark.

"She is. Or he dies."

I looked at Hayes.

Then Vance.

Then Ward.

"I'll go."

"No," Hayes said immediately.

I moved toward the door.

"With respect, sir, this is exactly what they expect me to do."

Ward studied my face.

"And?"

I slid the knife beneath my sleeve.

"So we disappoint them."
